Nortel Networks Kidz Online Selects Equinix to Deliver
High-bandwidth Educational Programming
Mountain View, CA and Herndon, VA -
February 25, 2003 - Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a leading
provider of core Internet exchange services, and Nortel
Networks Kidz Online (NNKOL), a nonprofit organization that
produces cutting edge technology training programming,
announced an agreement today whereby NNKOL will establish a
presence within Equinix’s Washington, D.C. area Internet
Business Exchange™ (IBX®) center. The agreement creates a
“Gigapop” network access point at NNKOL’s Digital Studio
located at Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology,
providing the ability to directly interconnect with the
networks serving 90 percent of the world’s Internet routes.
This broadband network project enables thousands of school
districts and after school programs across the country to
access NNKOL’s next generation Internet programming that is
offered at no cost. This innovative technology training
programming is funded in part by Federal appropriations
sponsored by Virginia Congressmen Frank Wolf (R-10) and Tom
Davis (R-11).
"By operating within Equinix's Internet hubs, NNKOL can
exchange content with an aggregation of Internet infrastructure
services providers and obtain transit from the world's top
networks with superior scalability," said Peter Van Camp, CEO
of Equinix. "This direct access to a choice of networks and
service providers enables NNKOL to significantly improve
performance while reducing costs through the elimination of
local loops and multiple network 'hops'."
This Gigapop connecting to Equinix’s IBX center positions NNKOL
as a leading pioneer for providing digital learning in the
upcoming broadband education revolution. The number of
broadband users has quadrupled in the past two years, rising
from 6.7 million in 2000 to 25 million this year, and there
have been several recent partnerships that could soon make
broadband learning a reality. All the major cable companies and
telcos providing broadband access are located within Equinix’s
Internet hubs allowing NNKOL to directly interconnect with
them.
"This Gigapop presents a tremendous opportunity to help shape
tomorrow’s Internet, re-imagine K-12 education, and lays the
foundation for new modes of learning,” said Chris Marshall,
chief technology officer for NNKOL. “Our media rich content is
routed through Course Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
interfaces over an optical fiber backbone connecting our
Digital Studio with a variety of networks located in Equinix’s
Washington, DC area IBX center. Nortel Networks’ CWDM
technology allows us to scale this backhaul bandwidth up to 8
Gigabits per second accommodating about 26,000 simultaneous
video streams at 300 Kilobits per second. This is the data rate
that makes our content compelling and we can now meet the
potential K-12 teacher and student demand for all North
America."
NNKOL’s partnership with Equinix will also allow for the
distribution of next generation educational content over the
Internet. Over the past 10 years, the United States has
invested $38 billion to bring technology and Internet
connectivity to the nation's schools. The E-Rate program, which
offers discounted telecommunications services for schools and
libraries, has resulted in $10 billion of funding toward
broadband Internet connectivity.
