October 9, 2003, Nortel Networks Kidz Online hosted a Lights on Afterschool event. Over 5,000 afterschool programs from across the country participated in the year's Lights On Afterschool event to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs. Over 120 kids from 8 afterschool programs were bussed to Virginia's Center for Inovative Technology to participate in the LIVE webcast and play "Who Wants to be a Multi-Media-aire?" Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Judy Y. Samelson presided over the event, Associate Deputy Under Secretarty of the US Dept. of Education and Wynn Watkins, JC Penney conveyed the importance of afterschool programs. The Anthony Bowen YMCA Tigers provided the musical entertainment and Nortel Network's Kidz Online's Joel Holland hosted the "Multi-Media-aire" show. The afterschool programs in the studio audience were: Edgewood Terrace, Buckman Road, Park Montgomery, Stewartown Homes, Southern Ridge, Anthony Bowen YMCA, Gateway at Southern Ridge, and Herndon Computer Learning Center.
